So raw seafood for breakfast is not everybody’s cup of tea. But when in Japan, it should be. Coming straight from the Tsukiji Fish Market in the AM, the best and freshest seafood is served in the outer market area where many queue hours for certain restaurants just for a meal.
This restaurant, like many, specialises in Donburi (raw seafood served on top of a bowl of rice) with prices ranging from AUD 10 to AUD 45 depending on the selection of seafood in your bowl. The combinations of raw seafood include fresh tuna (maguro), scallops, salmon, squid, prawns, octopus, salmon roe (ikura), sea urchin (uni) etc.
The raw fish and other seafood were no doubt extremely fresh. However, so was the prawn. Before this moment, I had not tasted raw prawns. I had a bite of it and realised that it was not for me. Why? It tasted sweet – acceptable -but the texture was too soft and kind of melted in my mouth, in comparison to cooked prawns that have a more chewy texture.
Overall, this meal was to me an edible Japan in a bowl. Definitely would have Donburi again, it really does represent a true taste of Japan.
I know I’d try it if I was in the neighborhood – silly not to partake of local favorites.
I can’t see it taking over from bacon and eggs as my preferred breakfast though, too much of an attitude shift required 🙂

Both! Seafood is a huge part of the Japanese diet and extremely nutritious at the same time. I think serving it raw is just one of the many ways they prepare seafood but the best way to serve it while fresh. 🙂

I went to Tsukiji markets years ago but failed to try donburi! Kicking myself! I did get to eat some amazing fresh tuna for breakfast though. And isn’t it incredible watching them slice up all the tuna with those huge swords?!

I loved having sushi after visiting the fish market. Such a cool experience, but perhaps I’ll stick to a nice bacon sandwich for everyday life!
