BEST VIEW OF TOKYO CITY SKYLINE – SHINJUKU, TOKYO, JAPAN

Where to go for the best view of Tokyo city? Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is the answer. Not only does this place boast the best 360 degree view of Tokyo city, it costs absolute zilch to enter.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Building has two towers. This building is 48 stories tall with free observation decks, North and South, located on level 45. It was the tallest building in Tokyo until 2007 when another tower called Midtown Tower was built.

Yes, to enjoy and see first hand such amazing scenery for free, there comes a price to pay – a long queue. The line for the elevator that takes you up to the panoramic observation deck is long, but because the lift is always efficiently packed, the wait is no more than 10 minutes long.

I believe the photos speak for themselves. We visited this place during the day and got an incredible view of Tokyo on a clear sunny day. Although not half as grand and without a lake, the park (Meiji Shrine) right in the middle of the city as pictured below reminded me of Central Park in New York.

There are cafes at the observation deck if you decide to have a nice coffee and a light meal while enjoying the view and gift shops if you decide to buy yourself a little souvenir.

If you have plans to visit Tokyo, don’t forget to catch the incredible view from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building! Make sure to check opening times and dates as it varies depending on which observation deck you go to and which days.

  1. Good post and photos. I also went up the Tokyo Metropolitan tower a few years ago and the view was fantastic (though the weather wasn’t as good as when you went), not to mention completely free as you point out.
